Massage, Aromatherapy, Counselling and Reflexology

Sue is based in the Lewisham area of south-east London. She offers treatments from the New Cross Natural Therapy Centre, opposite New Cross station and from Honor Oak Park, close to Honor Oak station. She also provides mobile treatments in the surrounding areas. Sue is well established as a massage therapist, regularly treating other professionals in complementary medicine, as well as a wide variety of others such as psychotherapists, doctors, dancers, sports professionals, and musicians.

Sue has many years experience working privately, as well as within the NHS where she ran a clinic for seven years. Patients were referred in by GPs, physiotherapists and others. This involved working efficiently, whilst sensitively, to find the root of the problem, bringing maximum results in a relatively short treatment time. Adults of all ages attended the clinic, with many people in chronic pain. For example with back/neck pain, old or recent injuries, arthritis, trapped nerve pain, sciatica, or suffering from stress, depression or anxiety. Sue also worked at the Maudsley Hospital offering massage treatments to people with severe and enduring mental health problems.

Whatever your needs, each holistic treatment is tailored individually and is delivered with skill and care. During massage, areas of tension are worked on at the depth you need for the relief of aches and pains, enabling you to relax and feel revitalized when you leave. Knotted, tense, painful or fatigued muscles are soothed and invigorated.

Aromatherapy is a soothing massage which will envelop you in the wonderful aromas of essential oils. Specific oils are chosen to suit you.

Reflexology is a very relaxing treatment for the feet through which, it is said, all systems of the body can be accessed and brought into a state of balance. Please see leaflet for more information or see Sue's website www.suethomastherapies.com.

Sue qualified in massage in 1989 at the Churchill Centre, Marble Arch, aromatherapy in 1998 at Greenwich, and reflexology in 2004 at Lewisham. All qualifications were gained with ITEC. She is a member of the Complementary Therapists Association, www.embodyforyou.com and is fully insured. Confidentiality is always respected.

Counselling

Counselling has become a much more acceptable form of help and it is alright to admit that something is wrong. It can take courage to make that first step. You may feel uncomfortable being honest with yourself, let alone a stranger. However, it can be a huge relief speaking out, exploring and processing feelings with someone who is not going to judge you. Friends and family can often feel too close for us to speak out with complete honesty. We may be worried about placing a burden on them or that they may retaliate in some way, or we fear they may abandon us. The counselling space allows a freedom to grow and to be yourself.

In finding a better understanding of ourselves, we find a greater sense of control in our lives, which in turn, increases self confidence and well-being. From this standpoint, we can make healthier choices and lead a happier life.

About me

I have worked as a counsellor and psychotherapist privately since 2010, and also as a volunteer counsellor for a charitable agency.

My work comes from the basic philosophy of the psychodynamic approach. I may also use CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) techniques as another means for us to make connections and look at what is happening for you. Mostly, of course, I bring myself. I am friendly and open, and offer a warm and non-judgemental environment for us to explore your concerns. I want my clients to feel safe, valued and accepted. I approach any problems that they bring to the counselling room, in an empathic, concerned and genuine way. These factors help you to express yourself and allow therapeutic growth.

I have worked with many types of issues, some of these are: relationship problems, anxiety and depression, low self-esteem, stress overload, problems at work or college, fear and trauma, loss and bereavement, body image and eating problems, physical illness, feelings of shame and guilt and identity issues, but also generally feeling that something is wrong and not feeling fulfilled or happy.

I have particular specialisms in loss and bereavement, mind/ body issues, and depression, anxiety and stress.

I am a registered member of the BACP ( British Association of Counselling and Psycho-therapy) and abide by their Code of Ethics. You may be assured of confidentiality.

My background.

My original counselling training was undertaken at Goldsmiths College, University of London, where I completed the MA in counselling (psychodynamic approach).

I attended personal therapy for many years myself so I understand being 'in the other chair' and I believe this helps me to 'tune in' to your feelings, as well as understanding my own.

My work background is in bodywork: massage therapy, aromatherapy and reflexology. I have been working in this area full-time for 20 years. Over this time, I worked for seven years for the NHS, where I was taking referrals direct from GPs, and for six years at the Maudsley hospital working with people with mental health problems.

In this work, I have always taken time to listen to my clients and I believe this has lead me to the counselling field. As a counsellor, I take an interest in the interaction between mind and body, which comes from my belief in looking at the person as a whole, and my long practice as a body therapist.

I very much look forward to working with you.
